{"id":72,"date":"2009-04-02T12:05:45","date_gmt":"2009-04-02T17:05:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/smallfarmdesign.com\/blog\/?p=72"},"modified":"2019-10-14T18:26:30","modified_gmt":"2019-10-14T23:26:30","slug":"5-usability-factors-to-get-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.smallfarmdesign.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/02\/5-usability-factors-to-get-right\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Usability Factors to Get Right"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>What is Usability<\/h3>\n<p>Briefly, usability is about designing a website that is easy to use so that it will appeal to as many visitors as possible. <\/p>\n<p>The <strong>International Standards Organization <\/strong>(ISO 9241) defines usability as:<\/p>\n<p><em>System usability comprises the extent, to which a product can be used by specified users to achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction in a specified context of use, where: <\/p>\n<p><strong>Effectiveness<\/strong> measures the accuracy and completeness with which users achieve specified goals;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Efficiency<\/strong> measures the resources expended in relation to the accuracy and completeness with which users achieve goals; <\/p>\n<p><strong>Satisfaction<\/strong> measures the freedom from discomfort, and positive attitudes towards the use of the product.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve simplified this a bit. My definition: <strong>Easy to complete tasks makes users happy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your website should be able to be used by as many visitors as possible without confusion. If visitors aren&#8217;t able to find what they are looking for I can guarantee they will leave and head to one of your competitors. <\/p>\n<p>So where should you start? <strong>Find where your problem areas are on your site, and fix them.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Easy to complete tasks makes users happy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><cite>Craig Kistler, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.SmallFarmDesign.com\">Small Farm Design<\/a><\/cite><\/p>\n<h3>5 Factors of Usability <\/h3>\n<p><strong>Learnability.<\/strong> How quickly can a new visitor learn the user interface to accomplish basic tasks? Is the design of the site intuitive? <\/p>\n<p><strong>Efficiency.<\/strong> How quickly can users perform tasks, find products etc? <\/p>\n<p><strong>Memorability.<\/strong> Can a returning visitor remember how to effectively use your site or application or are they forced to relearn everything from the beginning? <\/p>\n<p><strong>Errors &#038;  Error Frequency<\/strong>. How often does a visitor make errors while using your website? How serious are these errors?  Why are they making them and can they easily recover from these mistakes? <\/p>\n<p><strong>Satisfaction.<\/strong> After completing their task does the user have a good feeling about your company? <\/p>\n<p><strong>Focusing on these five points will give you a good start on fixing basic usability issues.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Designing with a focus on usability will enable you to create a website that matches your visitors expectations enabling them to complete their tasks with great satisfaction.
